  • Tricking People Into Thinking You're Famous

  • Last weekend Thomas Elliot and his friends went to a Virginia mall with the intent of tricking everyone into thinking Thomas was a famous celebrity. Not only did the plan work, but Thomas Elliot’s about to be an actual Internet celebrity because this video’s going viral.

From the Youtube description on the video:
"Last Saturday we went to a popular mall in Virginia and conducted a bit of a social experiment. Using his real first and middle name, and with the help of just a few staged people, tons of people believed Thomas was a famous actor, including mall security. The mall assigned us a security detail who escorted us everywhere and helped close stores for the supposed celebrity. They also took us through private corridors to avoid the frenzy. Our cameras were quickly shut down, and most of our footage was captured with a single iphone. The following is just a taste of all the autographs, pictures, and people who wanted get close to all the commotion. Do something fun today.
    "

Watch the video and you’ll see how quickly Thomas and his friends were able to convince everyone that he was actually famous. Before long he had teenage girls following him around the mall, mall security protecting him and stores shutting down so he could shop in private.

He even had people tweeting and trying to figure out who he was — and all it took was a small entourage and a hoodie. Rumors started floating around that he was in The Hunger Games and Spiderman and people wanted so badly to already know who he was, that no one bothered to checked if this was true.

Two middle-aged women approached the guy with the iPhone camera and asked who he was. The vague response implied that Thomas Elliot fought in The Hunger Games. This satisfied the women who responded, “we know he was somebody, the girls are going crazy.”

But he’s a nobody! That’s what so great about this entire social experiment. Everyone’s so eager to interact with a famous person, that they’ll accept that anybody is famous. Sure, Thomas Elliot sounds familiar. Sure I’ll let him hold my child so I can upload an “awesome” celebrity photo to Facebook.

It’s really crazy just how starstruck we get. If you learn anything from watching this video it’s that you should not only do this in your mall this weekend, but you should also always IMDB a celebrity before you start following him around the mall.
